POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Globe and Mail is seeking a Night News Editor to join our programming and editing team.

This is a key management position that requires first-class news judgment and the ability to make brand-defining decisions on deadline.

The Night News Editor is responsible for overseeing our journalism at night, across all platforms, ensuring that The Globe is offering the strongest stories and a good mix in the paper and online. This is a role in which teamwork is absolutely critical: the successful candidate will need to work closely with a diverse group of journalists, from reporters and assigning editors to editing, programming and visuals staff. 

Working under the direction of the Managing Editor, Priorities, this role will see through A1 and close the newspaper on time with good page flow. This role will also work with digital staff to ensure our journalism is properly reflected on our homepage, app and mobile alerts. The ability to craft engaging headlines, edit stories and identify gaps in coverage is key.  

This leadership opportunity offers the chance to work on our most important and ambitious stories on a daily basis with some of the most talented journalists in the country.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Directing edits on news and business stories
• Overseeing headlines on A1 and digital platforms 
• Directing coverage on late-breaking stories
• Managing staff who work evenings 
• Identifying any gaps in coverage

QUALIFICATIONS:  

• At least seven years’ experience in a daily newsroom
• Previous experience in newspaper production 
• Previous experience managing staff
• Strong editing and headline writing skills
• Solid news judgment 

This is a full-time management role, working Sunday to Thursday evenings. 

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
